The Sankey Canal Restoration Society
Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS) was formed in 1985 from various local residents who were appalled at the dereliction and neglect of England’s first artificial canal of the industrial revolution.

The Society is very active in the Halton area and works with the Council to improve the condition of the canal in the Widnes part of the borough. A volunteer hub is being set up at Spike Island which will have facilities for volunteer teams to help keep the Sankey Canal and Spike Island clean and tidy with the intention of bringing the canal back to full navigation in the borough after the construction of the new Mersey Crossing.
Volunteers are always warmly welcomed in any capacity, be they active on work parties or research and heritage projects.
