Halton Heritage Partnership were awarded Heritage Lottery funding to mark the centenary of WW1. This project focussed on those who had been awarded gallantry medals and returned after the war. We gathered together stories of people from across the borough in a booklet which is available from Curiosity Bookshop, Runcorn.
Funding also allowed for an education pack to be produced for use in primary schools, this was undertaken and resulted in interaction with many local primary schools on the subject which continues today.
Many of our Halton Heritage Partners who are all volunteers, regularly add to primary education syllabus with assemblies and talks on Halton's Gallant Heroes and local heritage in general.
Artist Jeni McConnell has created two new walks to share her discoveries whilst she was out and about exploring in the borough. Peppered with snippets of research and the odd mystery or two, they reveal the rich history of the area. Both walks are circular, one is centred on the area around Runcorn Town Hall, the other begins in Appleton Village and explores Victoria Park in Widnes.
The ‘Meandering and Mysteries’ walks are available as two separate leaflets. You can pick up printed copies at local libraries across Halton, view them online, or download and print them yourself.
We hope you enjoy the walks - you will find links from them to objects, photos, and oral histories on this website so please come back to find out more.
You can browse through the oral histories below and listen to short clips and the full recordings, or search them by occupation or date.
